Origin story time for Tim-22

Descender #12Descender #12 by Jeff Lemire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Poor Tim-22! Horrible people! Horrible, horrible man…. I guess that explains it.

A single issue that mainly consists of back story, which is a little unsatisfying.
And a quarter of this issue is previews for other comics. A bit much… ★★★½☆

Story arch heating up…

Descender #11Descender #11 by Jeff Lemire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the last issue (I think) the plot split into two (and a half) storylines. There is Andy, his ship partner and the Queen Between… They did not make much headway in this issue.

And meanwhile, on the machine moon… always enlightening to be the minority for a change, isn‘t it, Telsa?

Third point of view are the Tims. Nature versus nurture. Or rather, it‘s how you are raised that makes you a certain kind of human robot…

This one is a bit on the short side, only 21 actual pages. And several surprises, not of the good kind… The next issue should be quite interesting.

Convenient motorcyle mechanic…

The Backup Boyfriend (The Boyfriend Chronicles, #1)The Backup Boyfriend by River Jaymes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

„Dylan hoped the good Dr. Johnson excelled at his work, cuz he sucked at starting motorcycles and picking up the pieces after a failed relationship.“

My favourite romance trope, a pretend-relationship/marriage of convenience/friends-to-lovers set-up. Alec Johnson is invited to an awards ceremony. So is his ex with the new boyfriend. And his motorcycle mechanic Dylan volunters to go along as his pretend boyfriend, because the ex pissed him off. Say hello to a lot of complications of the emotional kind.

I went into this with very low expectations. Based on that it was very entertaining, with a minimal amount of annoying drama. Even the usual romance predicament of sane grown-ups not talking to each other was at a bearable level. Lots of pretty explicit sex—a bit much at times, actually. The usual HFN ending. But all in all I liked this and might even get the next one in this series of loosely related m-m romances. Which seems to involve the ex…

Meanwhile, on Laconia…

Strange Dogs (Expanse)Strange Dogs by James S.A. Corey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A goodreads friend mentioned that this story made a lot more sense after reading Tiamat‘s Wrath. So here I am. I think you should avoid reading this before Tiamat.

Set on Laconia. The ship building platforms have just come online. And something else…

I find it eerie, how human and mostly nice Winston Duarte comes across here and in Tiamat‘s Wrath. Other than him nobody of the main storyline makes an appearance. It‘s an unrelated story, except for the pink elephant in the room… Enjoyable. A little creepy. Strong Pet Sematary vibes.

Only two-thirds of this ebook are the actual story, the rest is previews and first chapters of two novels. That means Strange Dogs is maybe a little over 60 pages long.

New story arch…

Descender #7Descender #7 by Jeff Lemire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well, we are off to a slightly violent start…

Artwork… I really like that I can see the paper texture. The look is so different from what I usually read.

It’s so cute that Tim-21 behaves like an actual child, pout and all! Really ugly characters and a good sense of humour. My guess about the dark and broody guy was right as well. He seems to have issues… Onwards!
