I think I prefer the movie version…

Aquaman, Vol. 1: The DrowningAquaman, Vol. 1: The Drowning by Dan Abnett
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Well, he doesn‘t look like Jason Momoa! You can probably tell, I am clueless about Aquaman, besides what happened in the DC movies… and it works well even for noobs like me. And I even recognized the bad guy, thanks to the movie…

The colouring is pretty bright and it‘s all very glossy. I think it works well with the superhero genre.

Unfortunately the artwork is inconsistent, probably because the artists seem to change with every single issue. From Issue 4 the artwork declined in quality and the main characters changed too much in appearance in my view. The faces of Aquaman and Mera especially became a lot less defined, generally flatter and different. And Mera‘s eyes just turned empty and zombie-like.

The last part was better again in terms of artwork. Yet again another artists. I am pretty sure it‘s all for a logical reason, but reading these issues in one volume back to back makes for an uneven experience. The changing artwork distracted me from the story.

The story as such was ok. Nothing too complex or terribly imaginative.
