First Line Friday — Becoming

I didn‘t post anything since last Sunday. That‘s what happens, when you read a doorstopper, listen to a longish audiobook at the same time and watch too much TV.

I am still reading Revelation by C.J. Sansom and listening to Becoming by Michelle Obama for my #ReadPOC2021 challenge. I would like to finish both of them in January, but I am doubtful. Work is pretty stressful right now and I tend to watch more TV and read less, when that happens. Disney+ is quite entertaining… 😝 I am enjoying WandaVision and The Mandalorian. And then there is The Expanse on Netflix…

Anyway, I give you the first paragraph of Becoming:

„When I was a kid, my aspirations were simple.  I wanted a dog. I wanted a house that had stairs in it— two floors for one family. I wanted, for some reason, a four-door station wagon instead of the two-door Buick that was my father’s pride and joy. I used to tell people that when I grew up, I was going to be a pediatrician.“

From the book

I liked the first part of the book. I am about halfway now and we reached the part where Barak Obama is starting some serious campaigning, which I find less interesting.

First Line Friday is a meme created by Hoarding Books. Feel free to head over there, have a look around, grab a book and post its first line in the comments there and in your blog.

  1. That’s a really good first paragraph. What a great way to introduce an autobiography!

I’m sharing my time between a good book (Mindhunter by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker) and Disney + and Netflix. How are you finding the Mandalorian?

    1. I liked the first season and pretty much watched it in one sitting. The little green guy is very cute. I started the first episode of the second season, but I am taking that one slower.

I am thinking about rewatching all of the Star Wars movies in chronological order.

WandaVision was pretty odd, at least those first two pilot episodes.

  2. I really enjoyed the Mandalorian too, although I don’t have the stamina to watch a season in one sitting! It is baby Yoda that makes it work for me. In the Sequal trilogy I feel that the Force wasn’t really a character, it was just treated like a power some people have, rather than the unifying principle of the universe. I wonder if this is what Baby Yoda brought to the world?

PS: I just watched the first episode of WandaVision – very odd. I really enjoyed the Vision comics, but this new TV series is not my cup of tea I think.

    1. I don‘t think this is baby Yoda. Isn‘t this set after the movies? The little guy is very cute though.

WandaVision — the next two episodes are equally odd. Silly, actually. But now I want to know what it all means, so I will continue.

And tomorrow there will be another episode of The Expanse!

      1. Expanse—I still have to watch yesterday‘s episode…
Baby Yoda—I did as well in the beginning. The little guy still doesn‘t have a name, does he?
